BREATHE

From Dust and Shadows  ·  2019

Listen

Lyrics

ALL THE THINGS I'VE DONE
NOW IT SEEMS THEY'RE GONE
DOWN THE DRAIN
ALL THE WORDS NOT SAID
EVERYTHING THAT I KEPT HIDING IN

BUT I STILL BREATHE
SOMEHOW, I STILL BREATHE
BUT I STILL BREATHE JUST GOT TO BREATHE

AFTER ALL THIS TIME
CAN'T BELIEVE THAT I AM
SO STRAY, SO AFRAID
ALL THESE PICTURES IN MY HEAD
HANDS ONCE CLOSED ARE NOW INSTEAD OPENING

AS I CARRIED YOU OVER
YOUR LAST STEPS WERE MY STEPS
AND RIGHT THERE I WAS LIFTED
BY YOUR LAST WORDS
YOUR PERFECT LAST WORDS

A THOUSAND MOMENTS
FIRST IN MY HAND NOW IN THE SAND
ONE LIFE IS OVER
WHILE ANOTHER
STARTS OVER

NOW I CAN BREATHE
I FEEL I CAN BREATHE AGAIN
NOW I CAN BREATHE
JUST GOT TO BREATHE

The Story

Teri on how BREATHE was created:

This one is about my dad.

He owned a house in Puerto Viejo, at Playa Chiquita, and that beach was his heaven on earth. After he died my sister and I went there and filled one of the natural pools in the sea, the one we all used to bathe in, with flowers. Then we lowered handfuls of his ashes into the sand. It was an incredible thing to live and it changed both of us.

Later that year I told MARCO the whole thing, on a night the two of us got completely wrecked together. He went and wrote this song, and the lyrics came back almost word for word what I had told him. He emailed them to the band on December 14th 2010, and on January 22nd 2011 he sent me his acoustic demo. That was the first time any of us heard it.

It was very emotional and very cathartic and it is without question one of those moments of friendship that you keep in your heart forever. It turned into a wonderful song.

We have only played it live twice. At the release show for Dust and Shadows, and at an acoustic show we did at Bar La Esquina.

The illustration our great friend and collaborator DAVID CUBERO made for it is an hourglass. The top half sits in daylight under a sun, and the bottom half is inside a black square full of stars with a crescent moon, and the sand has already fallen into the night.

The album is dedicated to my father and to Jacobo's mom. They both passed away before we made it.
